Buying Shower faucets for your home

When you purchase a shower faucet, it is very important that you also purchase the rough in valve, if it is sold separately. A lot of manufactures sell them separately and with out it, you wont be able to use your shower.

This is not a ploy to make more money on your sale. Manufacturers sell the valve separately so your plumber can do the rough plumbing first and then install the faucet (trim) separately. It is very important that you ask your sales person if the valve is sold separately.
The valve is the portion that goes inside the wall; the trim is the decorative portion on the outside of the wall.

Side note: If you don’t plan on opening up the wall, you will not be able to change out the rough-in valve and there fore cant change the shower faucet. Unlike a sink faucet, you need to access the raw plumbing. You can change out the showerhead and or tub spout since these are only accessories, but unless you have access to replace the valve there is not much you can do. Also please note you cant use one manufacturers trim for another manufacturers rough in valve.
